"
THE HAWAIIAN WEDDING SONG"
"The
Hawaiian Wedding Song" is, strangely enough, not its original title.
It was composed by Charles E. King, Hawai'i's celebrated composer of
the first half of the 20th century, as "Ke Kali Nei Au" (Waiting for
Thee) for his operetta, "The Prince of Hawai'i" which premiered at the
Hawai'i Theater on May 4, 1925. It was first recorded on Columbia Records,
by legendary Hawaiian musicians Helen Kapuailohia Desha Beamer and Sam
Kapu in the same classic duet style sung by Mark and Diane today. Years
later, both Andy Williams' and Elvis Presley's distinctive recordings
of the song popularized it around the world for generations to come.
Although the beautiful English lyric is not a translation of the original
Hawaiian, it is recognized by millions.
